A month or so ago I came across this TED talk from Thandie Newton. I have always felt an allegiance to Ms Newton because of her Zimbabwean heritage which is odd because we have lived very different lives – regardless – I absolutely loved her TED talk.
What I’d like you to reflect on after watching this talk is the times when you may have experienced a sense of ‘otherness’ or exclusion from the status quo. Often these times are shrouded in shaming which is one of the hardest emotions to imbibe because it plays to the ‘I am not enough” script that many of us have running in our life stories. All I’d like for you is to just raise your awareness of when you may have felt this sense of otherness. As Ms Newton says, “Simple awareness is where it begins.” Next step – loving your sense of otherness.
